Mentha word indicates that collection of aromatic plants in which comes many other species of Mentha. Native to the Mediterranean, but now cultivated worldwide, mint comes over 2000, species – all labeled simply as “mint”. However, the Mentha species, which includes 25 to 40 types, is the true mint. Among the species are known as Mentha Arvenicice (Menthol Mint), Mentha Greyceilis and Mentha Piperita.
The uses and characteristics of all the species of Mentha are all together different because the parts of them are different from each other.
The fresh leafy tops of all the mints are used in beverages, fruit cups, applesauce, ice cream, jellies, salads, sauce for fish and meats; also to flavor vegetable and vinegars.
Roast lamb and mint jelly have become inseparable companions. In the Middle East and North Africa, mint leaves are utilized in every course of the meal, from appetizers to dessert and drinks, especially tea. In addition, mint is often used to give a tang to a wide variety of yogurt and stuffed vegetable dishes.
